The mountains via Betws-y-coed, Caernarfon, Dolgellau, Porthmadog. The inner heartland of Wales is easily identified. The heaped-up masses of the mountains are visible from a far distance and their bulk blocks all but a few ways of approach.

This geological fact, as so often, became a historical condition. Independent Wales, known in the Middle Ages as Pura Wallia, was easily contrasted with the Normanised southern coast, stretching to the heart of England at its border, which was known as Marchia Wallia.

Independent Wales in the thirteenth century was the territory ruled over by Llywelyn the Great, the kingdoms of Deheubarth, Powys and Gwynedd. What is now known as Snowdonia is, and always was, the inner citadel, the fastness at the heart of Gwynedd.
