Gwales Review
This is number 22 in the Corgi series, under the general editorship of Meic Stephens. These attractive pocket-sized titles, of which there are 24 in all, are intended to increase the readership of Welsh writing in English at all age levels. Some of the best known writers of Wales are represented and, clearly, Gwyn Thomas could not be excluded.

Land! Land! consists of six of Gwyn Thomas’s short stories and his fellow-feeling for the poor, the unemployed and the powerless of the South Wales valleys emerges on every page. But, of course, he presents the plight of his characters with a unique sense of humour and this owes something to the great American humourists Damon Runyan and S.J. Perelman.

In my opinion, Thomas has, even now, not been given the critical acclaim which he so richly deserves. But I hope that this extremely modestly priced selection may, hopefully, introduce new readers to the work of this literary genius from the Rhondda.
