The story of Thomas Williams, born in Penmachno, Gwynedd, who worked as a tailor until he joined the Liverpool Scottish Regiment in November 1915. He was injured in France, and spent time in hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne before returning to the front in November 1917. Tom was shot and captured, and ended up in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany.

Further Information:
Throughout this time Tom was sending postcards and photographs home to his family. They illustrate the book wonderfully: one postcard was a photograph of twenty-three prisoners in the POW camp, with the inscription: ‘Some Jolly Boys of Wales!’ The correspondence was addressed to Tom’s niece Kate, the author’s mother, who was ten when Tom came home from the war.
